Background: Ris is a promising student at the Hero Academy. She finally gets her first mission, and a partner.
Ris' first impression of her assigned partner, Penelopy Dracon, was that she seemed grouchy. She had flaming red hair, which was cut short and went everywhere. A headband kept it out of her face, but it stuck out in all directions with a wavy vengeance.
“Are you—”
“Pen. So, you're Boris?” the new partner said with amusement.
“Ris, if you don't mind.”
Pen should have dropped the subject, but curiosity impelled her to ask, “That's a boys name, right?”
“Well, Penelopy is not a very heroic name, is it?” Ris snapped. “It's all girly and pink. With frills.”
Pen replied in a slightly annoyed but calm tone, “I said my name is Pen. And how can a name be a color, anyway? That's just stupid. Anyway, I was only asking, no need to get upset.”
From the way she said 'my name is Pen' it was clear that she was adamant about this issue, but she didn't get riled up by the insult. Ris, on the other hand, was getting dangerously close to stabbing this “Pen.”
“Oh, so now you think I'm stupid; is that it?”
Pen sighed. Being a senior hero had it's advantages; being asked to train new heroes was not one of them. Pen could have argued, but it was a waste of energy.
“Let's just forget about it. You're Ris and I'm Pen, and we have to work together on this mission. It generally works better if we're not at each other's throats. What do you say?”
Ris would have liked to say a lot of things, colorful things, but the fact would remain that Pen had seniority, and if Ris refused to work with her, Pen would get another trainee, and Ris would go home in disgrace.
“Fine.” she mumbled.
The mission hasn't even started yet, and it was already turning out to be a huge headache.
